Classic Art Of Edvard Munch

October 28th, 2009 by Teylor Feliz

With Halloween looming, and the love of the uncanny and eery in the air, I thought it was only fitting to showcase some of the best art from Edvard Munch. The Norwegian expressionist artist born in 1863, had an amazing eye for the world, and he was quoted as saying, “We should no longer paint interiors with men reading and women knitting. We should paint living people who breathe, feel, suffer and love.” He was known for wanting to capture the true emotion, suffering, pain, loneliness, passion, fear, and the essence of human existence, and he wanted his art to create a strong emotional effect from its viewers. With titles such as Anxiety, The Scream, Separation, The Storm, Sick Child, and Death Agony, you can see that his art was straight forward and had one agenda, and that was to reveal the human existence for what it was, without sugar-coating anything. I just love his work, because of its ability to envoke an unsettling feeling withing, without having to be graphic in anyway; his art is subtle, yet commanding. I feel he is very well known for The Scream, but that most of his other work goes unappreciated. Here are some of my favorite examples of Munch’s art, and these always give me inspiration even in my Graphic and Web Design! I hope you enjoy them, as much as I do!
