Cloud Computing, 10 Web Operating Systems

July 23rd, 2010 by Teylor Feliz

A Web Operating System is a Web platform which allows the user to use a virtual Desktop through a web browser rather than using any particular local operating system. This amazing technology allows a user to access their own virtual desktop from anywhere around the world, without even using a network like with a remote PC. In addition, you are essentially using the Internet to work as a desktop, rather than an actually desktop computer. Wikipedia specifically states that: “Cloud Computing is Internet-based computing, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices on demand, like the electricity grid.” Today I have provided some great examples of Cloud Computing, Web Operating Systems for you all to try. Enjoy!

    JOLICLOUD 1.0
    Jolicloud 1.0 is a definite Cloud OS, with the added benefit of local applications.
    The HTML5 interface is available from capable web browsers for the Cloud Apps from your other machines.
    Ubuntu base means solid Linux safety standards, 700 one click install apps, speedy, free (my favoured price point).
    Do your stuff in Open Office &/or Google Docs (or both),
    whilst listening to StereoMood (cloud) or Spotify (local).
    I’m self confessed compulsive distrohopper, but Jolicloud is one I’ve always come back to, and 1.0 is something I will have permanently one one or other of my netbooks.
    Have a look if you’ve a netbook, prepare to be impresssed!

    Eye OS looks quite polished and functional. Nice post and by the way your link to the Lucid site is either broken or the site is down.

    I’ve tried eye OS a couple of months ago when I was doing a case study about cloud computing, and I was pretty impressed. Haven’t tried the rest of these, but I’m sure they’re impressive too.

    P.S. it should be “eye OS”, no “eyes OS”

      @Ciarán

      - Eye OS is very good and mature. I started using it some years ago and I am very impressed of what it can do.
      -The site of Lucid was down and is back up again.
      Thank you for your comment.

      @Zlatan Halilovic
      Thanks for noticing that. I fixed it.
      Thanks again!

    i have a question here. Can i use the computing power of cloud computing to simulate my programs that can take many hours or even days?

    • farin says:

      you mean like brute ?

      i don’t think so..

      because cloud computing this time only run for desktop-web-base application, not application like real desktop.

  6. These look like great systems. I haven’t decided which one I want to use yet though.
