Interview: Arfandi Hutasuhut (aka Fandy), A Web/Graphic Designer and owner of ArtFanDesign

September 29th, 2010 by Holly Lamarche

One of my favorite thing about having a blog is getting to know all of these amazing people through our interview series here at Admix Web, where we are publishing interviews of fellow web designers, web developers and graphic designers. We are continuing with the series and are still looking for fresh minds to pick and fresh faces to introduce to the design and development world! You can still contact me at hlamarche[at]admixweb[dot]com if you would like to be interviewed, or if you know someone who would like to be interviewed. This week we have a fellow web and graphic designer named Arfandi Hutasuhut (aka Fandy), from Indonesia, who has an insanely busy schedule, who survives on only 4 hours of sleep, but seems to balance his life as a father, husband, and web designer very well! This week get to know the face behind ArtFan Design! I hope you like the interview! Enjoy!

Thank you so much for doing this interview for Admix Web. Can you give us a brief background on yourself?

My Name is Arfandi S. Hutasuhut, I am about 30 years old, a husband and father of 2 beautiful daughters, and I come from a small town of Sumatra – Indonesia. I have a graduate degree in Information Engineering from Depok – Indonesia. Currently, I working full time for a Spanish company in Jakarta, Indonesia as a web and graphic designer, and also freelance during free time as a web designer, art director movie maker, video editor and expand my knowledge in photography. During the weekend, I spend more time with my children and family. I love art, contemporary art, digital art and photography.

List three things people might not know about you.

I do not like calculus, I am an environment lover especially ornamental plants, and I hate cockroaches… :(

Why Design/Development as a career? What were your inspirations for that profession?

I love art, I like the design. The Web is a media, where I could express an art and design that is useful and functional. My family is my inspiration.

Do you do more front end or back end web development?

I do more front end. To me, any sophisticated applications without support of a good front end neither works or is useless.

Are you self taught or did you study design/development?

I got my development knowledge in the college. For design, I am self taught. I learned a lot from tutorials on the internet and also from friends who wanted to share their knowledge, and I keep practicing. Me and my friends have this joke, “If you don’t know, ask Uncle Google!” :)

How many years have you been in the field, and how has the field changed during that time?

I have been seriously involved in web design since 2002, during college until now. But, I left web design in the beginning of 2004 to the end of 2005, I explored the field of audio-visual, involved in video maker team as an art director and video editor during that time. In late 2005 I returned to web and graphic design by working for an Information Technology Company for Software development. I found a lot of trouble in the early of my return to web design. Internet Technology, Information and design moved so fast. And in early of that year I started to know CSS. We know how difficult it was to design a website with the table system.

Can you describe a day in the life of you?

Nothing special, I wake up at 4.30 in the morning, bathe and pray, checking email / twitter / facebook. Around 5.30 playing with my children, breakfast, check schedule. At 7.30 to go to the office, respond some emails, work, meeting, work again and many time got to pantry looking for idea (and some food) . 5:30 came home and work from home. Dinner, study, and play with the children. At 8 to 12 am work on Artfan Design and any projects and or survey to find out the interest things of me then write it for next post on blog, read some blog articles. Then sleep after late midnight.

What does your workspace look like?

Very messy, all kinds of food and coffee is always there beside the keyboard and one more … cigarettes, yes I am a heavy smoker. (so hard to stop)

Would you define yourself as introverted or extroverted? Describe your personality?

Extrovert. I like to hang out and joke with friends, socialize with different people. Especially during weekend, I do not spend much time on the computer, except if there is project.

What makes you unique?

I’m a cool designer, I design with my heart.

What is your favorite color? Does it infiltrate your designs?

Green and Blue. Always infiltrate!

What was your first design you actually marketed? How do you feel about it now?

My first web design or precisely my first web project was in 2002, Website of University of Pancasila , full flash website.

You will laugh if you see it, so do I. :)

What is your favorite type of design work? And, what has been your favorite project?

I do really like logo design, web, and print design. Provide a powerful concept. I like my logo design for a software netcis product, not only designing for the logo but also design the website, software and print media of that product.

Explain the significance of your company name.

Artfan Design, taken after my name Arfan, loves art and design. Art for beauty and comfort, designed for functionality and usability.

Are you a Mac or a PC?

PC, Mac is too expensive for me. I always get PC everywhere I work. Not that I do not want a Mac, I really want it. Maybe next time!

What design tools do you use? Which tools would you suggest to fellow designers/developers?

Earlier I used corel digital art (for win95). From the beginning of my college until now I use photoshop, illustrator, in-design, dreamweaver. Development is depends on the project, sometimes I use visual studio, and in current project using flex.

Tell me about you blog: What made you start it and why do you write?

At the beginning Artfan Design is a portfolio website for get project and job, after several times of domain and hosting changes.
I started Artfan Design as a blog more then a year ago, in May 2009. I began to share the results of my design, knowledge, my interest on webs, photography, blogging and share inspiration. As long as I am blogging, it is not only projects and dollars which I get but also increase my knowledge and skill.

What is your favorite blog article you have ever written? Why?’

Actually it is a blog post of design ideas I made: Login Page Template – Tag Style. I like it because it is unique and gives a ton of traffic to my website.

What is your view of Vlogging?

I’m not a heavy vlogging fan, bandwidth in the area where I live is very low and expensive.

What are some of the design and development blogs you read on a regular basis, why?

I read various blogs. And usually when someone submit links of their article to my website and or send their article link via email. Not regular but much time I read SmashingMagazine and Envato TUT always give me new knowledge, and ClientFromHell always make me smile. :)

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I want to be an entrepreneur in design and printing, build my own business design services.

Please share some pearls of wisdom for up and coming designers in the field.

Establish relationships and good network is important, so it is not only the relationship with friends grows but also wider network market, more project, and increase knowledge and skills and money of course
